We love our carpets and pets but not the odours and stains that come from pets poop, vomit, or urine. Whether you are a cat or dog owner, accidents can happen. Pet’s urine and faeces leave stains, but their odour is what usually upsets. The sooner the mess is cleared, the more successful the stain cleaning will be. When removing all pets’ mishaps, use homemade products, not chemical cleaners. They hardly remove odour in carpet fibres and may keep attracting the pet.
Below are some of the ways that pet owners can remove pet stains from carpet.
For Wet Stains
For solid waste, remove it with a spatula, plastic scraper, or a dull knife. Try not to rub the stains on the carpet fibres. For urine, soak up as much urine as possible. Set a thick layer of white paper towels on the wet area and cover it with a thick layer of newspaper. You can also put a newspaper under the stained spot. Stand on this stuffing area for some minutes and keep repeating this until all the liquid is absorbed. Thoroughly rinse the stained area with cold, clean water, and blot dry.
For Dried Stains
Spray pet enzymes directly on the stained area and follow the directions on the container.
If you can still spot the stains, consider renting a carpet cleaner from your local store or contact a professional carpet cleaner. Don’t use cleaning chemicals to remove pet odours and stains.
Finding Older Messes
In some instances, old messes can invisibly dry, and making it hard to locate the source of the disgusting odour. To pinpoint them;
- Sniff out stained areas with your nose
- Carefully inspect the suspect area to find the unrevealed soiling
- Also, use a black light to help reveal the spot areas
Renting carpet cleaners and buying pet stain removers may be quite expensive. Consider making your own natural pet-friendly stain removers using available products in your cupboards to protect your pets. After knowing how to identify and clean your stained carpets, you can use the following steps to make your stain remover.
Materials Required
- Paper towels
- White vinegar and water of equal amounts
- Baking soda
- Vacuum
Step 1: Blot
Place paper towels to blot the stained pet area. Don’t rub the stains with the cloth. Rubbing will only spread the stain unless you want your furniture to cover the spot. Keep soaking the paper towel until the place is dry.
Step 2: Apply the Vinegar
Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar in a bucket, spraying bottle, or water bottle. Then soak the stained area with this solution. Vinegar cuts through the pet stain and neutralises the ammonia in urine. Proceed to scrub the spot and get deep into the carpet’s fibres to remove all pet urine.
Step 3: Pour Baking soda.
After scrubbing, mix and apply a little of the vinegar solution and baking soda to the wet area. As soon as it starts working, you will hear and see crackling and fizzing. Leave the mixture on the carpet for some time until it’s dry. Vacuum the baking soda after it’s entirely dry. After trying all these steps, always keep your carpet clean and make it unattractive to pets. Set an appropriate bathroom area for your pet.
